CHALLENGES:

Using only a crew of two and a cast of three, we shot this film over a single weekend on location at my family’s dirt farm near Raleigh NC. Set in a hot, dry post global warming world, the original plan was to shoot the film in a way that the searing sun was always present and in backlight, leading to the overwhelming heat of the world. But both production days ended up being overcast and cool, so I had to rethink the visual design of the piece on the spot and developed a warm look in post-production to help convey the drought like conditions of this dystopian future.

Client wanted a viral music video to market their cloud services, and with hopes of creating an iconic company mascot in ‘Nate’.

The most challenging aspect of the shoot was trying to find a working server room to shoot in. We didn’t hold the budget to build a server room set, but no company wants a film crew working around their sensitive data. Mere hours before the first shot was expected, we were able to locate a server room within a local university.

Client wanted a non-traditional, long form pharm ad to be used for social media marketing of its flu vaccine. So we decided to tell the story of a magical mist that could solve all of Mom’s daily problems.

Of course, though, pharma ads are heavily regulated and must contain nothing misleading. We were taking a risk trying to include a fantasy sequence within an ad that can’t depict anything untrue. We also wanted to keep an element of realism to the piece so as to give moms a place to connect with the lead character. To get by FDA regulation, the solution was found by having the fantasy scenes holding a pink cloud vignette throughout, and also tweaking the exposure and color scheme of the shots that were ‘fantasy sequence’ versus ‘real application sequences’.

Concept was developed and rolled out by Walk West, a social first agency. Co-producer, co-director, cinematographer, video editor, and all of the post-production by W. Jarvis Rooker. Shot with a Alexa Mini using Zeiss Compact primes.

This is a little home movie I shot using a vintage Super 8mm movie camera acquired at a local Goodwill store. Set to the famed Joe Cocker song, I made use of kinetic editing to match the intensity of the song, while also invoking a sense of nostalgia.

Client wanted a fun :30 music video to play on local TV stations to enforce mask wearing at the top of the pandemic.

CHALLENGES:

This was early in the pandemic, so shooting any original footage was out of the question. Instead, we reached out to a number of local celebrities for them to shoot and submit their own footage, then I edited everything together and developed a fun graphic to use as both lower thirds and subtitles.

The video was a success and received heavy play during both 2020 and 2021 until mask wearing became the norm.

Company event video. Client wanted to capture the fun, energy, and pomp of a party celebrating their recent company merger. It was a great project to shoot as the party gave plenty of B-roll options. I was able to shoot and edit the piece within just a few days turnaround. The client was incredibly happy with the results.

Band Together - a non-profit - throws an annual concert in Raleigh to help fundraise for a number of local charities. This video was designed to both reside on their website as well as play live at the concert, The content was aimed to educate those in attendance about a handful of the charities for which the funds were being raised. Stylistically, we were looking to highlight both the local impact, as well as to move people emotionally.

Johnson & Johnson sponsors an initiative to help nurses innovate new ways to improve healthcare. This online video was created to capture their leadership training held in Greensboro NC, conveying the personalities of the attendees as well as their feedback about the program.

What is a book trailer, you may ask? They are the literary version of a movie trailer, designed to hype a book before and after its release, intended to boost interest and sales.

‘Underestimated’ is an autobiography by Donald Thompson, and the video is designed to give a broad stroke of what his story is and why it is special.

Inspired by Italian New Wave and 70s era Hong Kong kung fu films, Real Gone Cat is just a minute and a half of pure fun. Shot in Raleigh NC.

This is the first video within a series of five, all intended to educate incoming base leadership about the importance of maintaining Fort Bragg’s delicate and unique ecosystem. The videos are all shot documentary / interview style, capturing the naturalists and biologists who all work together maintaining Fort Bragg’s natural setting, both as it should be and also for how it can benefit the US Army.

Walk West agency handled of all marketing for the NC State Fair for 2019, 2020, and 2021. This is a sizzle reel featuring the footage and tempo used for those spots.

I handled all of the post-production for dozens of various TV, radio and social media spots - featuring 30s and 15s in 16x9, 1x1, 4x5, and 9x16 formats.

Campaign tackled TV advertising, social media advertising, and radio advertising broadcasted statewide.

Another social marketing video for AstraZeneca, this one designed to deliver more of a general flu awareness message through a short story of a mom literally trying to avoid the ever-present and annoying flu.

Shot in multiple locations over the course of two days, the shoot required a number of company moves and lots of logistics planing. It was shot using a Red Cinema Camera.

Book trailer for Secret Warrior by Duke's Coach P. The video employs a cinematic style to build hype for her book release, conveying the ups and downs of her career and personal life.

10 minute Supernatural Thriller shot on a mega micro budget.

We were able to shoot the film in 36 hours. It was sold into international and national TV distribution at a profit, and will be soon on rotation on Shorts TV.

A short form documentary commissioned by the Southern Environment Law Center to bring about awareness of Georgia Power’s rate increase on the poor.

Client wanted an honest, raw portrayal of how their product is helping people live better, more fulfilling lives. They held a contest amongst their user base to find three real couples for us to interview and shoot a documentary style long form marketing video for social media use.

Video acquired millions of views over its lifetime. Shot in Raleigh NC and Durham NC.

Wasabi returned to Walk West agency for another viral marketing music video. Where as the last one was strictly an introductory video for the world of Nate and Wasabi, this one introduces the new CFO character Kate, and emphasizes the cost benefits to shifting to Wasabi.

This is the last of a series of five videos that were contracted to help raise funds for the Holt Brothers Foundation. The pandemic prevented the brothers from holding their typical flag football fundraising tournament. So they held a virtual fundraiser instead, these videos were created offering different competitions and challenges and then posted weekly to social media to raise funds.

12 min narrative short, Neo-western

Filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico using mostly New Mexican cast and crew, the script for The Bakers Road Killings won the 2008 Duke City Shootout production grant. The competition flew me out, set me up with a crew, and funded the making of the short film, which was given one week to be completed and premiere at a festival held at the end of the week. The festival awards show was hosted by Bryan Cranston, who was in town at the time shooting the first season of a then-unknown TV show called Breaking Bad.
